Surplus - Terrorized Into Being Consumers, by Eric Gandini

Competing with 20 other international documentaries for the Silver Wolf Award, Surplus was awarded on friday November 28 in Amsterdam and it is the fist Swedish film to win it since the prestigious IDFA started in 1988. The motivaion of the jury reads as follows:
SURPLUS triggered an intense and passionate debate amongst the jurors. This film about consumerism totally consumed us. It used the language of music video, propaganda and commercial advertising as a response to the forces of globalisation. It fights fire with fire. The questions it raises are ultimately more important than any answers it might suggest. And we believe audiences can only profit from the debate that will ensue. For its originality, sense of humour, irony, forcefulness and visual virtuosity, the Silver Wolf Award goes to SURPLUS.

On April 23 Surplus was awarded by One World Documentary Film Festival in Prague, Czeck Republic.

The Czech Radio Award for the best use of sound or music in a documentary.
"This film uses sound in a very elaborate and creative way. Sound in all of its forms - i.e. real sounds, artificial sounds, spoken comments and music - strongly emphasises the rhythmic factor of the whole film. The principal statement of the film is based on sharp contrasts and sudden editing. The result is a dynamic, ironic and ultimately unjoyful statement on the paradoxes and contradictions of a society that is painfully going through the process of so-called globalization. This film is composed in the same way as a music composition where individual audio plans form a single rhythmic complex. Monologues by famous personalities (and ordinary people as well) are edited, phased, permeated and articulated into elaborate rap songs. The director used all factors in this film in a very efficient, harmonious and balanced way in order to form an alarming statement about a contemporary, disharmonious and unbalanced world."

There are french, english and spanish subtitles in the archive. Just don't use Total Commander because you don't see any subtitle there.
